Ein Beitrag zur Ausstellung \u201eModell, Modell…\u201c des Neuen Aachener Kunstvereins, RWTH-Projektwochen \u201eDer k\u00fcnstliche Mensch \u2013 Visionen des Machbaren\u201c in Aachen, 4.5.\u201316.6.2000<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eFocus on Companies\u201c bezieht sich auf die zeitgleich in Aachen stattfindende Ausstellung \u201eFocus on Genes\u201c. \u201eFocus on Genes\u201c ist eine vom soziokulturell agilen Hygiene-Museum in Dresden veranstaltete Wanderausstellung, die Gentechnologie \u201eauf popul\u00e4rwissenschaftliche und erlebnisorientierte Weise vermitteln\u201c will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gem\u00e4\u00df der Projektank\u00fcndigung sind \u201edie grundlegenden Ausstellungsinhalte von \u201aFocus on Genes\u2018 in einem reich illustrierten Katalog, der im Rahmen des \u201aGen-Welten\u2018-Projektes 1998 erschienen ist, ausf\u00fchrlich behandelt\u201c. Wie in dieser vorangehenden Ausstellung des Hygiene-Museums soll wieder Wissen zur Gentechnik vermittelt werden, um \u201esich eine eigene Meinung zu verschaffen\u201c und dem Ziel n\u00e4her zu kommen, \u201edie Chancen und Risiken, die der Einsatz der Gentechnik bieten kann, aus medizinischer, ethischer und gesellschaftlicher Sicht abzuw\u00e4gen.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The text reads: The basis for genetically manipulated seeds is the biological diversity of the South which companies contract exclusively through free imports. The use of manipulated seeds, on the contrary, is strictly controlled by the companies through patents and contracts for use: In order to secure their profits, the companies bring sterile genetically manipulated seeds to the market. Thus, the seeds own ability to reproduce is intentionally destroyed. In other cases, farmers are forbidden by contract to plant a part of their harvest in the following year. This transformation of common property into a market product in many cases creates poverty and underdevelopment.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Um ein Gegengewicht zu den f\u00fcnf in Deutschland und der Schweiz gezeigten \u201eGen-Welten\u201c-Ausstellungen zu setzen, habe ich 1998 das zeitgleich stattfindende Projekt \u201egeGen-Welten: Widerst\u00e4nde gegen Gentechnologien\u201c realisiert*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In einem im Rahmen dieses Projektes ver\u00f6ffentlichten Text** habe ich darauf hingewiesen, dass der Konzeption von \u201eGen-Welten\u201c die falsche Grundannahme zugrunde liegen w\u00fcrde, dass einzelne Individuen die M\u00f6glichkeit der Mitbestimmung h\u00e4tten, welche Technologien zur Anwendung k\u00e4men und welche nicht. Die Entscheidung dar\u00fcber f\u00e4llt jedoch nicht auf einer demokratischen Basis, sondern steht im Zusammenhang mit den m\u00e4chtigen Kapitalinteressen und dem politischen Druck der Konzerne. Ob \u201eGen-Welten\u201c oder \u201eFocus on Genes\u201c \u2013 die Rolle der Ausstellungen besteht nur in der Akzeptanzbeschaffung!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das Projekt \u201eFocus on Companies\u201c r\u00fcckt daher Konzerne, die die gentechnologische Forschung und Produktentwicklung vorantreiben, ins Zentrum der Kritik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ausgangspunkt der f\u00fcr die Ausstellung in Aachen produzierten Printserie sind aktuelle Publikationen von Konzernen wie Novartis, Schering, Bio-Rad Laboratories und Roche, die als Sponsoren von \u201eFocus on Genes\u201c auftreten. Einzelne Seiten aus Gesch\u00e4ftsberichten und Brosch\u00fcren wurden ausgew\u00e4hlt, wobei die Originaltexte, die verschiedene Teilbereiche von Gentechnologie thematisieren, durch schwarz umrahmte gelbe Textfelder ersetzt wurden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Im Gegensatz zu den Warnschildern des \u201egeGen-Welten\u201c-Projekts stehen bei \u201eFocus on Companies\u201c nicht die von den Technologien ausgehenden Gefahren im Mittelpunkt, sondern die \u00f6kologische und soziale Logik der Gentechnik und ihre globalen, gesellschaftspolitischen Auswirkungen. F\u00fcr diese Bereiche ist in den Publikationen der Konzerne und in \u201eFocus in Genes\u201c kein Platz. Daher sind die Texte der Konzernbrosch\u00fcren mit einem politischen Kommentar \u00fcberdeckt, der Themen aus der Ausstellung aufgreift (Xenotranplantationen, Gentech-Reis mit Vitamin A, Antimatschtomate) und andere Perspektiven einnimmt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \nThe text reads: Genetic engineering is based on the delusive idea of an absolute control-ability to steer biological processes. Whereas the companies expect increased profits from the new capitalist offensive in the agrarian sector, genetically produced food stuffs have no advantages from the perspective of the consumer. Nonetheless, they are to carry the ecological, economic and political costs and risks. \n<\/div><\/div><\/li>\n

      \nThe text reads: Genetic engineering follows a false approach to the solution of socio-political and ecological problems. \nResearch attempts, i.e. to equip rice with vitamin A by means of genetic engineering, stand in clear contrast to the alleged motivation of wanting to counteract the diseases caused by a lack of nourishment of people in the \u201cThird World\u201d. The implementation of genetically manipulated rice would, namely, contribute to the legitimization of the disproportional distribution of food stuffs and wealth of the existing exploitative relations. Hunger can only be fought through a new distribution of global wealth between the \u201cNorth\u201d and \u201cSouth\u201d against the interests of the companies. \n<\/div><\/div><\/li>\n

      \nThe text reads: The private sector character of genetic engineering manifests itself in that these technologies are primarily developed and applied by transnational companies which have the results of their research protected by patent rights for better marketing. Although genetic sections are actually discovered and not invented, the industry was able to establish the patenting of genetic information. With that, a patent of a certain sequence means a reward of a technological potency, i.e. the ownership of a device for the sequencing of genes. \n<\/div><\/div><\/li>\n <\/ul>\n <\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
